In recent years, Kawano has developed sculptural works in which he places his own body in relation to materials gathered from the sea, mountains, rivers, and other natural environments, passing the traces of his body on from one material to another.

For this exhibition, Kawano begins with 1,000 kg of salt produced from the seawater of the Seto Inland Sea. The form moves from the body to salt, iron, lead, and finally back to salt. As it passes between materials with different physical properties, the relationships between positive and negative forms, void and solid, mold and figure, and that which receives and that which passes on are repeatedly reversed.

For Kawano, a mold is not simply a means of faithfully reproducing the same form. It also functions as a site through which traces, material reactions, distortions, and contingent changes that arise during the process are passed on to the next material. In this process, naturally derived materials and human-processed materials such as metals do not remain fixed in a single role, but continue to change as they are carried forward from one stage to another.

Through Kawano’s practice, this exhibition considers the relationships between body and material, ownership and circulation, and the ways in which things are inherited as their forms and roles continue to change.

Kawano concludes his own statement with the following words:

“The salt that first received my body ultimately appears in the form of my body. I make sculptures in order to transform borrowed materials into different forms, let them leave my hands, and entrust them to the cycles of nature. Looking forward to the day when they may return.”
