川野 昌通 / Kawano Masamichi 「海を借り、また預けるために / To Borrow the Sea, and Entrust It Once Again」2026.10.3(sat)〜2026.10.31(sat) 12:00〜18:00

この度、artcenter NAZUKARI WAREHOUSE では、2026.10.3(sat)〜2026.10.31(sat)に川野 昌通 / Kawano Masamichi 「海を借り、また預けるために / To Borrow the Sea, and Entrust It Once Again」を開催いたします。

artcenter NAZUKARI WAREHOUSE is pleased to present Kawano Masamichi’s solo exhibition, “To Borrow the Sea, and Entrust It Once Again,” from October 3 (Sat) to October 31 (Sat), 2026.
In recent years, Kawano has developed sculptural works by placing his own body in relation to materials gathered from familiar natural environments such as the sea, mountains, and rivers, transforming the traces of his body into different forms.
For this exhibition, Kawano presents a new work that begins with 1,000 kg of salt produced from the seawater of the Seto Inland Sea. Beginning with his own body, the form is transferred from salt to iron, then to lead, and finally back to salt. As the materials shift from one to another, the relationships between negative and positive forms, void and solid, and that which receives and that which passes on are repeatedly reversed.
Borrowing materials from nature, transforming them through the body, and ultimately letting them go again. Through Kawano’s practice, this exhibition considers the relationships between body and material, ownership and circulation within sculpture.
【Exhibition Overview】
In recent years, I have developed my work by collecting earth and sediment from the sea, mountains, and rivers, and using the act of burying my own body in these materials to create molds as a point of departure. I work with materials borrowed from the natural environments around me, transforming them into different forms through my own body. Rather than keeping what emerges from this process in my possession, I have come to feel that I would like to entrust it somewhere else once again.
For this exhibition, I use 1,000 kg of salt produced from the seawater of the Seto Inland Sea. I bury my body in the salt, and transfer its form through iron and lead before returning it once again to salt. A negative mold, ordinarily a means for producing a positive form, is ultimately transformed into the positive itself, reversing the relationship between means and end. In this way, the materials are not confined to a single purpose, but are passed on from one stage to the next as their forms and roles continue to change.
I make sculptures in order to entrust what I have borrowed somewhere else once again. Looking forward to the day when it may return.
